Frequently Asked Questions
Why train at Shostal JKD Academy?
I won't presume to know everything about every other martial arts school out there, but I will tell you this: at Shostal JKD Academy, I will teach you to fight. You will leave my class knowing how to better take care of yourself every time. We will begin with basic fighting techniques and strategies and gradually refine them into precision skills. I am not interested in how well you can punch or kick into the air; with me, you will be hitting real targets from day one.
What is your lineage?
My lineage is Bruce Lee → Steve Golden → Sean Madigan → Dave Shostal
What if I studied Karate (or Tae Kwon Do, or any other martial art) can I still learn JKD?
Absolutely, so long as you can come to class with an open mind, or as Bruce Lee said, an 'empty cup'. Are there any physical requirements to learning JKD?
It is always recommended that you consult a physician before engaging in any physical activity. As long as your doctor says 'okay', your height/weight are not an issue.
Can I take private lessons or must I join a class?
You may do either or both. Class description can be found here. Contact me here to register or for more information.
Are there any age or gender restrictions?
You must be 18 years of age to join, and both men and women are welcome.
Do you offer separate women's programs?
With the exception of periodic Live Safe seminars, I do not. In regular classes, women and men train together.
Will you give me private lessons in my home?
Yes, this can be done. Please contact me via the Contact page of this website.
Will I need to buy equipment?
Over the course of your training you will be required to purchase some personal protection equipment, such as headgear, shin protection, an athletic cup, etc. for sparring. Can I book you for a seminar at my location? Yes, please contact me via the Contact page of this website.
